Role: The mysterious man behind the torture. His disturbed past and the effect of broken home: seeing his father beat his mother and having no regret or remorse for his actions, causes him to gain a sense of achievement when he inflicts pain on such innocent girls, following in his father’s footsteps. He believes that he is creating a masterpiece of gore and pain inflicted films, but fails to realise these sick productions, that he feels he must produce are a sign of his unstable mind and a psychotic personality. James Thomas or the ‘masked man’ as we see him, tortures the 2 girls in the most horrific and gruesome ways, locking away the truth about his personality away from the family upstairs, James resorts to the cellar with his prise possession of a knife in his hand, constantly seeking to feed his addiction by inflicting pain.
Purpose: To inflict pain on the girls, controlling the amount of suffering they endure and to show them what real suffering is. By being the one behind the knife he believes he is the one who holds the power.
